Is Spore really the best place to have babies?

It is according to "The save the children report". According to the ranking, Singapore is the best place to be a mother in Asia, and the 15th best in the world. Yes we are ahead of Japan! Finland is no. 1!

My friends were asking, if Singapore is such a great place to have kids, why is our fertility rate so low? Well, this goes to show no one is going to have more babies just because some report kinda of 'encourages' it.  The considerations that go into deciding to have a baby is something very personal- there's so many unique challenges for motherhood here. Top of the list is cost & time.

  1. Spore is a very safe place to have babies as our hospitals & staff are very good. But the cost of bringing up a kid here is a different issue. I think that's the thing that puts people off.

  2. Besides cost, it's stress from both work & demands from family
Who wants the same kind of lifestyle for the next generation- so choose not to have kids lor!
We are the "ME generation" like to enjoy life first without the burden of having to take care of kids and every thing that comes with them, tuition, school vacation etc......
Take away the stress & babies will come naturally!

  3. No!!!!
Do your math, your Boss pays you more than the cheap FTs and naturally you need to work harder than them. Inflation is hitting the roof, Everything needs lots of money. If you don’t make enough, your family will suffer. Your kids will see other kids from richer family have things & vacations they cant have on your low income. Most parents spend more on their kids than themselves. People are choosing not to bring children to the world to suffer.

  4. Our grand parents generation, they never have the luxury to think of such things! Those days almost everyone has a big family. No such thing as family planning. Everyone is poor yet they have lots of kids- no choice. Everyone just get by & it's ok!

Now we have too much knowledge, information & choice & we complain too much.

    1. If you want certain things like freedom, lifestyle, than things , like kids has to go. But think for a sec, now it might be wonderful & all- still honeymoon stage in your life & career. But what will happen in a few decades when you grow older?

Who's going to accompany you, talk , listen to you? Who's going to take care of you? What do you have to look forward to in your 60s & 70s when you have no grandkids, because you don't want children, go figure.....

    2. But having kids don't guarantee they'll take care of you when you grow old. Nowadays people don't even make enough for themselves! Come the time, they'll put u in an old folks home- the cheap sort some more...hahhaha...

  5. We are a victim of our own success. Parents take children as investments. Who says one must send them for endless tuitions & enrichment classes? But that’s what’s happening right ? You decide to do it & you complain that’s too expensive. If it's too X than don't do it, you can choose not to do that right? But parents are so kiasu so, is that the parents fault or the system’s fault. Does all these extra courses guarantee anything?

    1. The system makes it impossible not to follow. When everyone has tuitions & if your kids don't, then he'll be left behind! Do you want that for your kids? To be the only one in class not to have these extra help?
Though the extras dont guarantee success, but it does guarantee that at least your kid is competing on par with the rest.

    2. That's what everyone thinks, that's why the tuition centres are flourishing, the kids are overwhelmed, the parents resources drained.
Kids are only taught how to answer exam questions- turn out book smart ONLY. Can only do well in exams but lack in all areas like EQ or creativity.
Spore is left with only followers & no innovators!
      Sad!

    3. Very well said! And if you dare to be different in our educate system, the teachers will whip you into shape, destroy your creativity & there goes your dreams.
I've one such teacher before, hated her like crazy!

  6. Chance upon your blog, interesting things you guys discussing.
Spore is a good place for everything. Yes it could be challenging at times. But just look around you & compare. It's really not so bad. Not perfect but certainly better than many other places in the region:) my 2 cts!

  7. No place is perfect for kids ,not even spore.
It's your karma where you are born- do good today, so that you'll end up in a better place next e.g. places like the slums in India perhaps?
